The first match of the day see’s to consistent teams meet in a quarter final again, they met in the quarter finals in 2006, Argentina and Germany between them hold 5 FIFA World Cup titles.
Argentina have so far put in a flawless performance winning all of their group match’s and dispatching Mexico in the knockout round. Maradona has a found his dream team for this tournament and seems to be sticking with a winning formula.
Germany have, apart from a small hiccup against Serbia, put in a similarly clinical performance thus far in the tournament and dispatch England in the last round with a stunning 4-1 performance.
Thes two teams have met 5 times previously in the tournament over the years with Germany seemingly hold the upper hand by winning 3 against 1 win for Argentina in the 1986 finals, the other a goalless draw in 1966. In the battle of psychology Argentina may have a margin over the Germans having beaten them in a friendly match back in March of this year. Another being the number of yellow card’s issued and counting going into this match with the Germans carrying 5 and the Argentines carrying 3 yellow carded players into this match.
“I’d love to be out on the pitch this time and pull on a shirt and play. It’s a game we can’t afford to lose but I wouldn’t compare it to the 1986 Final. Germany are a very tough side for sure. They’re more powerful than Mexico but we have the resources to beat them,” Diego Maradona, Argentina coach.
