Uraguay send Ghana, the last African Nation team left in the tournament, home after a tense match lasting the full 120 minutes of playing time allowed and decided on a penalty shoot out in Uraguay’s favour.

The first half started with Uraguay taking command of the pace and narrowly missing a few early chances to take the first goal. Richard Kingson was well tested in the first 20 minutes. Then Ghana settled to the pace of the match and developed some opportunity’s of their own and indeed took the lead on the stroke of half time when Sulley Muntari powered in a curling 35 yard shot that fooled the Uraguay keeper and left Ghana 1-0 up at the end of 45 minutes.

The second half didn’t see Ghana capitalize on the high of leading into the break when Diego Forlan netted a swerving free kick from the edge of the box to even the score and revive Uraguay’s chance. As the match progressed with both teams looking for the winner to take them through to meet the Netherlands.

The score remained at 1-1 when 90 minutes where finished and ushered in an extra period of play during which several opportunities were missed by both sides but most notable Ghana’s chance to end it with a win when Gyan missed a last minute penalty.

Gyan redeemed himself in the penalty shoot out by converting the first penalty unfortunately it would not be enough when the Uraguay keeper saved two shots in a row leaving Abreu to put the final ball in the net and seal Ghana’s fate in this tournament.

Uraguay now face The Netherlands on 6th July in the semi final.
